Recommended by Mike Williams

Mike has been the Boffins storeman forever, it seems. Mike is also a writer of fiction and poetry. His 2 novels Old Jazz and The Music of Dunes were published by Fremantle Press, and are still available on request at Boffins. He has also published short fiction and poetry in various Australian literary journals. His reading tastes are wide, but mostly fiction and biography.

Once again, Margaret Atwood has produced an unsettling tale laced with dark humour and sparking prose. To read this novel is to enter a dystopian world that is both frighting and believable. This has been Atwood territory ever since The Handmaid’s Tale from 1985, and she does it so well. Charmaine and Stan are a couple down on their luck in a sinking financial crises, and they readily agree to take part in a social experiment where they can live a comfortable life removed from a hand to mouth existence sleeping in their car, and the criminal elements that prowl the decaying streets. What initially appears to be a reasonable deal soon starts to take on darker elements and is further complicated by the sexual tensions of the leading characters. A fine addition to the Atwood canon.
